What technology that might be considered as leading edge is being used or explored as a proof of concept, in healthcare?

Within my field of eHealth, there are many. In vital signs monitoring, there's MedApps, Bosch Health Buddy, and coming up Waldo Health. There are the online doctor consult companies like American Well and InteractiveMD. Behavioral monitoring--there's WellAWARE and GrandCare. If you are looking for leading edge companies you might want to browse through Telecare Aware, a news and info 'digest' site where I'm North American Editor.

BTW there is a huge area of interface with mobile technologies (your smartphone) from text messaging to viewing (or taking!) medical imaging on same.

I agree with Donna regarding mobile apps. One interesting corner of innovation is the US Military's TATRC program called mCare. mCare is following TBI (traumatic brain injury) patients post discharge with some encouraging results.

David--if you look at Telecare Aware we've been covering mCare since the AllOne Mobile days in early 2010. Here's the latest article: http://www.telecareaware.com/index.php/dod-in-full-clinic.... Look for mCare and Diversinet using our search function.

We are looking at cognitive software architectures used to model human reasoning as the basis of a new generation of applications in the realm of clinical decision sciences, including decision support but also device integration, collaboration, and predictive modeling.

To Steven, you are really talking about A.I., perhaps on a neuromorphic computing paradigm or something like it. To Donna, the 800 lb. gorilla is whether the mHealth apps/software are going to be approved by the FDA as Class 1, 2 or 3 devices.
